Julie Owens MP Federal Member for Parramatta MEDIA RELEASE National award recognises local volunteer photographer To celebrate International Day of the Volunteer Julie Owens, Member for Parramatta awarded 20 outstanding local volunteers with the National Volunteer Award last night, with local hero Yong Quan Cong being one of those recognised. Mr Cong used to be a professional photographer before he retired some 12 years ago. Since then, he has volunteered his skills in photography to the Chinese Community, covering community functions, no matter what time of day. Once a week for five years he has been giving a free information session on photography to members of the Chinese Community. Speaking about Mr Cong last night, Julie said, “From early in the morning until late at night, sometimes after midnight, Mr Cong volunteers sometimes up to 12 or 13 hours per day. He is extremely busy on weekends taking photos for big functions and events to meet community needs. “Mr Cong has no leisure time for himself. He lives a humble life; he eats simple food and sleeps less than 7 hours per day, spending the remainder of his time volunteering for his community. “His family and his community have noticed his level of dedication and they told me they are worried about his health because he works so much. “But that’s not all”, Julie said. “Wait for it – Mr Cong cannot drive, and so walks between train stations and venues, sometimes up to four kilometres per event, carrying his camera, ladders and equipment. Ladies and Gentleman, this is truly a remarkable volunteer.” Julie was delighted to meet Mr Cong and present him with his well deserved National Volunteer Award for such an outstanding contribution. During her speech to the more than 150 people gathered, Julie said “Volunteering is an essential part of the Parramatta community. Volunteering connects us, strengthens our sense of belonging and creates positive relationships that build a stronger local community”. “We in Parramatta rely heavily on the contribution of volunteers – the unsung heroes who give up their free time to deliver services, in the areas of sport, emergency services and community welfare”, she said.
