Federal Government Backs Down on Proposed Changes to Racial Discrimination Act

Monday, 11 August 2014

ACCA welcomes the Federal Government’s decision to not proceed with the proposed changes to the Racial Discrimination Act 1975 (“Act”). We believe the current Act has worked and served the needs of our multi-cultural communities well in Australia over the years.

ACCA has echoed the sentiments and concerns expressed by many organisations and community leaders.  The Attorney- General’s department received a large number of submissions opposing the changes to the Act. This demonstrates community concerns that changes to the Act could do more harm than good to our community.

ACCA congratulates the efforts of numerous organisations and those individuals who have made submissions to the Federal Government in opposing changes to the Act. We believe the extended public debate has raised awareness that racism and intolerance has no place in our society.

Media releases from a number of organisations and community leaders are listed below.
